The XC90 is one of the best-selling Volvo products. This crossover received many rewards for its styling, safety, and reliability. But, now it is time for radical changes for 2020 Volvo XC90.
The redesign is in plans. A big one. Nevertheless, the Swedish company is not going to rush with it. Instead, they plan it for 2020, with a release date of next-gen SUV probably late in 2019. One of the major changes for 2020 Volvo XC90 is the move of production from China to the USA. That means a lot of benefits for buyers in the most important market in the world. But, that is not all. The company will completely redesign the XC90 crossover with exterior and interior modifications.
While this is the official plan, we can hear rumors that the engine room is also under reconstruction. Well, 2020 Volvo XC90 will keep the petrol engine as its base source of power. But, for the next generation, engineers are developing a hybrid unit. It is based on the 48V system by Continental. Volvo is not the first carmaker to use it. That means Swedish company is turning to proven and reliable hybrid system.
Production of 2020 Volvo XC90 Moves to the US
At this moment, one of the most favorite luxury crossovers on the US market is being imported from China. Factories there are specialized to make vehicles for buyers from the United States. But, the manpower might be cheaper there, but the cost of import and transport is making the overall cost the same. So, Volvo is making plans of moving the production to the US. By doing that, they will speed up the process of delivery of 2020 XC90 to final customers. After the order, buyers are no longer waiting for their car for too long, since production on the North American soil accelerates everything.
2020 Volvo XC90 Redesign and Changes
The redesign of the 2020 Volvo XC90 comes after only six years. The first generation of the crossover lasted for 12 years. But now, after the huge success of the SUV, we are not surprised by this move. Volvo wants to improve its product in every way, and the best way to do it is big reconstruction and redesign which leads to the next generation of XC90.
The crossover was very stylish. Parts made of the highest-quality materials provided durability. So, why the company has to change something that works fine? Why risk? Well, Swedish carmaker is always trying to improve their offer. All leading companies are doing the same. So, competition and keeping the pace with rivals is another reason for the redesign.
Outside, we expect to see larger grille. This will lead to the different design of bumpers, and possibly smaller air vents. Redesign of headlights is also certain, but we don’t know too many details. Side look should remain the same. Distinctive appearance is making the XC90 different and eye-catching. Long hood and wheelbase are something we can’t see every day on streets. Finally, the rear end is also expecting the big overhaul. Lights, tailgate design, bumpers, exhaust tips, and other changes will bring completely different look.
As its predecessors, the 2020 Volvo XC90 will be heavily armed with the latest infotainment and safety features. The modern entertaining system will come with DVD players for rear seats at the highest trim levels. Be sure that XC90 will bring everything that is modern and up to date in 2020.
Comfort is never in doubt with Volvo. This is one of their trademarks. Through the entire history, the Swedish carmaker is building a reputation of a company that always delivers very cozy and elegant vehicles. And then they have spacious 2020 Volvo XC90. With so much room for extravagance, we can’t imagine what to expect from the SUV. The current one is breathtaking even in its base trim. The next-gen XC90 is going to be even better, for sure.
2020 Volvo XC90 Engine and Specs
We believe that 2020 Volvo XC90 is going to continue to use a 2.0-liter engine as the base choice. It is up to buyers if they want turbo- or supercharged version of the four-cylinder unit. In the first case, they can count on 260 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. With slight improvements, supercharger adds almost 70 horses more. At the same time, twisting power raises to 300 pound-feet.
An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard for both engines. But, while the turbocharged version gives options between front- and all-wheel drive, the supercharged crossover is coming only as AWD.
2020 Volvo XC90 Continental 48 Volt Electrical System
Current XC90 is already a hybrid. But the next generation will replace the current one with Continental 48 Volt Electrical System. Benefits of the mild-hybrid system are numerous, from better fuel economy to zero emissions.
At this moment, the hybrid XC90 is more powerful than conventional units. Based on the supercharged version of the 2.0-liter engine, the system delivers 400 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque. With Continental 48 Volt Electrical System, the output is not going to be so high. Instead, the fuel economy is definitely getting a boost. The current model can return only 25 mpg and 54 MPGe, with the 14 miles range of drive on electric power.
The new system is very efficient. It is already tested in some Audi cars. Saving in the drive is not ordinary. The Continental structure is using cruising and braking to save and even create electrical energy. With smart brakes, the next-gen 2020 Volvo XC90 will be able to save up to 1 liter of fuel every 100 km (0.26 gallons on 60 miles).
2020 Volvo XC90 Release Date
The 2020 Volvo XC90 will be out late in 2019. The Swedish carmaker rarely fails with their estimations. Well, we still don’t know for sure, but the new hybrid system should be there right from the day one of the next-gen SUV.
During 2019 the production will be moved to South Carolina. Volvo is building a plant there, and the brand-new 2020 Volvo XC90 will be the first vehicle to roll out from factory lines. After it, we could see XC60 coming the same way as well.
The price is still unknown. The new generation, with numerous upgrades, will definitely raise the cost of 2020 Volvo XC90 compared to its predecessors.
